What is a domain name?

A Domain name is a name that identifies a computer or computers on the internet. A domain name, sometimes known as a URL, is shown in the address bar of your web browser. A URL will typically looks like this:

http://www.vivosystems.co.uk

Why do I need a domain name?

A domain name in the world wide web contains everything as far as everyday people are concerned. When you set up an online business you will need a domain name as it allows you to protect your business name and is how clients will find you.

The http://www of the web address can not be changed as it part of the fundamental workings of the Internet, it identidies that the protocol in use is HTTP, and that the information is on the world wide web (WWW) although the www can be omitted in most cases.. The domain extension, .co.uk in this case, can be chosen from a selected number of extensions available (see below). Apart from the start (http://www.) and the end (.com) you can choose any text to go in the middle.

What domain names are available?

Registering a domain name for a company need not be expensive, we typically charge £12 + VAT for a .co.uk domain name.

What happens if I need to transfer my domain name?

Your domain name will be held on our reliable web servers and should you decide that you'd like it to be held elsewhere, that is fine, although there will be a small £10 handling fee.
